pfSense®Plus Software Version 24.11 is Here!
We are excited to announce the release of pfSense Plus software version 24.11. This release brings several major features that our users have requested, along with over 70 other improvements and bug fixes. Release Notes are available for review.
Major features include:
Kea DHCP Enhancements, including support for High Availability and increased integration into Unbound. Among other things, this allows for DHCP client registration in the Unbound DNS Resolver and smoother updating of Unbound.
Building a Site-to-Site VPN with OpenVPN Data Channel Offload (DCO)
We have added a new recipe, OpenVPN Site-to-Site Configuration Example with SSL/TLS and DCO. This new recipe guides administrators through the configuration process for a site-to-site OpenVPN DCO link between two peers. DCO impacts how OpenVPN itself behaves, which can make configuring some roles such as a site-to-site VPN using DCO a challenge. Netgate provides a variety of pfSense® software Configuration Recipes, including recipes for site-to-site VPNs using IPsec, WireGuard, and OpenVPN.

Using Bidirectional Forwarding Detection (BFD) to Quickly Detect Outages
An important function of network routers is the ability to detect outages and begin the mitigation process as quickly as possible. In most environments, this means the need for near instantaneous detection of the event. This month’s Tech Tip will explain how to use BFD to detect a network outage much faster than would be possible using only an Interior Gateway Protocol like OSPF. This will allow OSPF to begin the process of recomputing available paths through the network, routing around, and mitigating the problem much sooner.
