New Netgate 8200 1U
The Netgate 8200 Secure Router with TNSR software is something we’re delighted to announce and is now available for pre-order. This new appliance is extremely fast. With an 8-core C3758R Intel Atom 2.4 GHz processor and 16 GB RAM, the performance numbers surprised even us!
This unit is uncharacteristically quiet for such a powerful 1U system with an actively controlled cooling fan integrated into the chassis baseplate. Here is some general information about the Netgate 8200 1U you may find helpful:
The Netgate 8200 1U is only available in a Max configuration. There are no upgrade options.
The 8200 only comes preassembled in a rack mount configuration from Netgate.
Unlike the Netgate 4100 and 6100, the 8200 is actively cooled with a whisper-quiet fan.
Although the 8200 only comes rack-mounted, the rack mount can be removed to turn the 8200 into a desktop (the six rubber feet are included), or it can be wall mounted with the optional kit available from the Netgate store.
Something to remember about buying a Netgate appliance with TNSR software is that it automatically comes with TAC assistance included for the first year, and each year thereafter with an active, annual, TNSR subscription. We talk about TNSR software a lot in blogs and social media, but let’s break it down into plain language, without all of the technical jargon.
TNSR software is about high-speed, low-cost, affordable routing.
TNSR software is not “a faster” version of pfSense software. The two perform distinctly different functions. A Security Gateway with pfSense software is designed to protect your network. A Secure Router with TNSR software is about moving traffic quickly from one point to another.
The two primary ways to configure TNSR software are with the command line interface (CLI) or with RESTCONF API. TNSR software does not have a GUI interface like pfSense software does.
This type of high-speed routing is normally accomplished with high-cost ASICs solutions. TNSR accomplishes these speeds with regular, off-the-shelf hardware, and specialized software. The cost is a fraction of what you would pay for other solutions with this kind of throughput.
Each Netgate Secure Router purchased includes the first year TNSR subscription. The annual subscription includes access to TNSR software, upgrades, and technical assistance - TAC Pro is included with each subscription, or choose the upgrade with a faster response time - TAC Enterprise.

At Netgate, we’re working hard to bring pfSense Plus software 23.01 to release, and the latest step has been the recent BETA version. While this isn’t new to some of you, the general roadmap at Netgate to get to a RELEASE is:
Private snapshots that we test internally to verify fixes work as expected and close issues.
Public snapshots that we encourage the community to test.
BETA versions that we highly recommend the community to test with their own configurations, in their own environments.
A Release Candidate (RC) is built and tested as fully as possible, by both Netgate and the community. The goal is a single RC, but if something needs to be fixed, a new RC will be created and the testing begins anew.
Once the RC has passed all testing, a RELEASE is tagged, built, tested, and announced (and a lot of backend work and documentation associated with the release).
As you can see, testing is a major component of the process, both by Netgate and the community. With this BETA, still more testing is required, but it’s one step closer to a final RELEASE.
We encourage everyone to test as much as possible, especially in your environment with your configuration (lab, not production). Our recent 23.01 BETA blog provides details about the features in the upcoming version, as well as details on how to report your findings. All of our efforts continue to strengthen pfSense software for everyone!
We talk about backups a lot because they are important. JD Strong has just updated his recent Automatic Configuration Backup (ACB) blog with a new video tutorial. If you don’t have ACB running on your system, you should. Read the blog or watch the video directly on the Netgate YouTube Channel for guidance on how to use ACB.
