TNSR-based Transit VPC
Netgate® recently announced the coming availability of TNSR-based Transit VPC to Amazon Web Services (AWS). Transit VPC, built by Solutions Architects at AWS, allows AWS customers to easily provision and interconnect their AWS Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) – geographically dispersed and/or running in separate AWS accounts – from a central VPC at high speeds.
TNSR™ ("tensor") is high speed networking from 10 Gbps to 100+ Gbps that will first be available on AWS followed shortly on Microsoft Azure. It is Netgate’s next generation Firewall/VPN/Routing platform based on FD.io’s Vector Packet Processing (VPP), providing high bandwidth VPC interconnection and simple management through a RESTful API, which integrates to virtually any cloud orchestration management solution.
You can read Netgate's press release for more infomation on TNSR and Transit VPC.
pfSense software releases
On December 14, 2017, Netgate issued a security and errata maintenance release of pfSense 2.3.5-p1 for customers who are still running 32-bit based i386 Intel systems. Netgate also released pfSense 2.4.2-p1 for customers who are on 64-bit Intel systems or ARM systems. This maintenance release includes several security patches, stability fixes and infrastructure updates.
One of the most useful changes is an update to the way that our ACB Auto-Configuration Backup service works.
See our blog for full details.
Application detection on pfsense software
Thanks to the Snort package and OpenAppID, pfSense is now application-aware.
This layer 7 functionality arrives through an upgraded version of the Snort package for pfSense software. Maintained by Bill Meeks, the Snort package has been available for many years and is one of our most popular packages. Thanks to his continued efforts, as well as those of Demair Ramos, OpenAppID is now part of the Snort package.

Netgate had a tradeshow booth at Amazon's big end-of-year show AWS re:Invent in Las Vegas from November 27 to December 1. We hope you stopped by if you were at the show. We announced TNSR-based Transit VPC as mentioned above. It's a new cloud-based software platform that will start on AWS but will move to Microsoft Azure and highspeed hardware-based routing platforms.
Tip of the month
One clear benefit of purchasing a pfSense Security Gateway from Netgate is that a one-year subscription of pfSense Gold comes with every pfSense appliance purchased — a $99 value.
A pfSense Gold subscription comes with access to lots of great technical information and documentation like the Monthly Hangouts, but one of the best benefits is that you can install the Automatic Configuration Backup package so that your configurations are automatically backed up every time you make a change to it.
You can store up to 100 encrypted configuration backups for 10 different devices, giving you peace of mind knowing that your configuration is safe, no matter what happens to your firewall.
Note: Remember that a pfSense Gold Subscription does not include support.
To register your Netgate appliance for a free one-year subscription, go to www.netgate.com/register. Otherwise, click on the button below to learn more.
