New Product Release: Netgate 6100 Max with TNSR Software
In case you missed our blog or press release, on August 29, 2022 we announced that the Netgate 6100 Max Secure Router with TNSR software was available for order. With TNSR software, the Netgate 6100 Max transforms into a super-scale, ready-to-use router that supports high-speed throughput without the super-scale price. This is for anyone with a need for 10 Gbps or better performance under heavy traffic loads and who wants to maximize their IT return on investment.
The product is an ideal edge router / gateway solution for organizations in need of versatile WAN connectivity (1 to 10 Gbps WAN connections - across 4 RJ45, SFP, and SFP+ ports) and high-performance LAN connectivity (4 discrete, unswitched 2.5 Gbps LAN ports), all in a fanless, desktop package or the new pre-assembled 1U rack option.
With TNSR software, testing shows delivery of 18.6 Gbps L3 routing, 18.6 Gbps ACL filtering, and 7.2 Gbps AES-GCM IPsec VPN throughput - using iPerf3 traffic as a benchmark - compelling figures for a product in this class, especially fanless and at a reasonable price point.
Do you have key workloads moving to the cloud? Are your remote business locations suffering from drinking through a straw? Let TNSR software supercharge your site-to-site VPN needs. The rise in worker mobility, distributed offices, and complex multi-cloud hosting of business applications is escalating organizations’ reliance on encryption. This puts computational strain on traditional VPN solutions, especially as bandwidth needs evolve from 1 to 10 to 40 Gbps or more.
Traditional router/VPN appliances buckle under the load - particularly when the packet traffic shifts towards IMIX. TNSR software shines at high-performance site-to-site IPsec, especially when compared to traditional solutions underpinned by kernel-based, single packet-at-a-time processing approaches.

pfSense Plus in the Cloud - An AWS NAT Gateway Alternative
Did you know that pfSense Plus software has been available on AWS and Azure clouds for years and that you can try pfSense Plus software with a 30 day free trial?
Here are 3 popular use cases for running pfSense Plus software on the cloud:
Connecting on-prem infrastructure to the cloud
Protecting cloud-based applications and workloads
Providing secure access to cloud workloads and applications
One of the key benefits of running pfSense Plus software on the AWS cloud is the potential cost savings of using the pfSense network address translation (NAT) compared to other options. Note that pfSense software includes NAT as part of its powerful firewall and routing capabilities. Other firewall products do too, but Netgate pfSense Plus software includes this, and many other services, as part of its “all-in” pricing. There are no extra or hidden costs.
We are streamlining the development and testing process for pfSense Plus software. Effective with the next pfSense Plus software update, the release schedule will switch from September to November. This will place the next pfSense Plus software release after the next TNSR software release in October. This change will help ensure that any extended testing required for pfSense software development does not impact TNSR software releases.
The new pfSense Plus software release schedule will be:
22.11 (November, 2022),
23.03 (March, 2023),
23.07 (July, 2023),
23.11 (November, 2023).
The TNSR software release schedule (February, June, October) will remain unchanged.
Netgate will be observing Monday, September 5, 2022 as a holiday commemorating Labor Day in the United States. Sales, Manufacturing, Shipping, and the US offices will be closed, resuming on Tuesday, September 5, 2022.
Upcoming Netgate Holidays:
Monday, September 5, 2022 - US Labor Day
Thursday, November 24, 2022 - US Thanksgiving Day
Friday, November 25, 2022 - Day after Thanksgiving Day
Monday, December 26, 2022 - Christmas Day (Observed)
NOTE: TAC Support will be fully staffed and operational on Monday, September 5, 2022, and all holidays listed above.
Netgate Tech Tip of the Month: Changing VPN Keys
According to the Global Risks Report from the World Economic Forum, 95% of cybersecurity risks are due to human error. You might have changed your password recently, but when was the last time you changed your VPN shared keys?
For optimal security, changing VPN keys periodically is a good practice. The practicality of doing so largely depends on the size of the VPN (e.g. a simple two-site point-to-point link vs a remote access setup with dozens of users). In any case, the most important thing is to coordinate the change with the remote peer(s) so all parties are using the correct keys.
